All-America Honors for 2010 Division I Cross Country Season Released

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Monday the 80 student-athletes that received All-America honors for the 2010 NCAA Division I Cross Country season. Overall finish at the NCAA Championships is the determining factor as the top 40 individuals from both men’s and women’s races earn All-America plaudits from the USTFCCCA.

Oklahoma State repeated as the men’s team champion at Monday’s NCAA Division I Championships and did so with the third-largest margin of victory in race history in scoring a 73-193 victory over Florida State. The Cowboys led the field with five All-America honors. Girma Mecheso, German Fernandez, and Colby Lowe finished in the race’s top ten in leading the squad to their third NCAA title in men’s cross country and the Oklahoma State’s athletics department’s 50th all-time NCAA title. Freshman Tom Farrell (29th) was one of only two freshmen to win All-America honors and junior Johnathan Stublaski rounded out OSU’s scoring.

Wisconsin captured three All-America honors, the second-most amongst men’s teams, on the way to a third-place team finish. The Big 12 notched eight men’s All-America honors while the Big Ten scored six.

Liberty’s Sam Chelanga won the men’s individual title for the second-straight year and garners All-America honors for the fourth time in his career.

Villanova and Georgetown led the way with four All-America honors on the women’s side. The Wildcats scored their second-straight team title, winning a 120-154 decision over Florida State. Georgetown (167) finished fourth overall, two points behind Texas Tech (165).

Villanova was led by junior Sheila Reid who became the first female to lead a team to a national title while also winning the individual crown since 1994. Jennifer Rhines, also of Villanova, matched that feat 16 years ago in bringing the Wildcats a sixth-straight title. Reid and tenth-place finisher Amanda Marino helped Villanova to their all-time, NCAA best ninth national crown.

The Big East, with 10 from its member schools earning women’s All-America honors, led all conferences. The Big 12 was second in the category with seven.

The USTFCCCA will announce Division I National Athletes and Coaches of the Year in the coming days.
